ASA Presents A National Civic Engagement Forum

Older Adults as Agents of Change
Supporting Purposeful Lives for the Good of Others

AiA 2009

Monday, March 16, 2009, Aging in America Conference, Las Vegas, NV
Moderated by Marc Freedman and Nancy Morrow-Howell
Underwritten by a grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies
Presented in Collaboration with the National Coalition on Aging

The winter 2007 Issue of ASA’s quarterly journal Generations published a seminal body of knowledge on Civic Engagement in Later Life as a tool for professionals to enhance the quality of life of the older adults they’re dedicated to serving. In 2009 ASA brings some of the best published models to life through this national forum. Convening select Generations authors and other experts in the field, the published works are viewed through the larger lens of the latest and best examples in civic engagement in diverse communities. This national forum will convene leaders and key stakeholders from diverse communities interested and engaged in advancing the practice of — and body of knowledge for — civic engagement. Our daylong program will feature the who’s-who in civic engagement including our two moderators for the day: Nancy Morrow-Howell, PhD, Ralph and Muriel Pumphrey Professor of Social Work, Washington University, and Marc Freedman, CEO and Founder, Civic Ventures. Space is limited, Register now..

“This issue of Generations, literally in black and white, provides evidence that civic engagement has
reached legitimacy as a field-- it is a rich and thorough publication with high quality authors.”

- Laura A. Robbins
Program Executive Head U.S. Program on Aging
The Atlantic Philanthropies

This National Forum will help organizations improve their infrastructure for civic engagement activities by providing:

Understand the value of multi-faceted community approaches to promoting 50+ civic engagement
Gain insight into strategies that support the involvement of older adults from culturally diverse communities in civic roles.
Increase awareness of successful, evidenced-based civic engagement programs.
Enhance their ability to use effective screening, assessment and placement strategies.

Join us for an exciting and informative day. Advance registration is required. Lunch is included so that we start, stay and engage in the dynamic agenda together. This program requires your commitment to attending the whole day. Winter 2006-2007 Generations Issue: Civic Engagement in Later Life

For philanthropists and scholars, policy makers, advocates, popular authors, and nonprofit entrepreneurs, civic engagement has become the mantra of the day in aging. With so much attention, and some confusion, surrounding the phenomenon, it's time to step back and ask, What does civic engagement mean? Why does it matter now? And what are the implications of a civically engaged older population -- for older people themselves, for those who work with them and their families, and for the larger community? The guest editors are two of the most respected voices on the topic: Nancy Morrow-Howell, Pumphrey Professor of Social Work, Washington University, St. Louis, and Marc Freedman, founder and CEO, Civic Ventures, San Francisco.
