Who should utilize the DriveWell toolkit and materials and how will the information assist my organization/community?

Are there materials in the DriveWell Toolkit appropriate for developers/community planners to assist them in designing future communities or retrofitting existing ones?

A number of community leaders and planners would benefit from understanding the community mobility needs of the growing older adult driving population, the need for communities to provide access to infrastructures that promote continued physical activity through biking and walking, and the physical and mental changes that happen as one ages.

What will DriveWell training do for my organization?
  1. DriveWell emphasizes the importance of older adults having continued access to an array of services and organizations in the community. The program can raise awareness of the significance of continued mobility to your organization, and to the economic and social health of the community.
  2. Secondly, mobility plays an important part in vital aging. Your agency can benefit through positive association with DriveWell as promoting the health, safety and vitality of older adults.

What is included in the DriveWell Toolkit?

Do you have materials promoting healthy lifestyles, i.e. improved physical activity to slow sensory deterioration and prolong functional fitness?

  1. DriveWell materials specifically address evidence-based practices that can prolong driving ability as an Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL) through exercise, medication management and sleep health.
  2. For information on nutrition, see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sponsored site at www.asaging.org/cdc and click on Road to Driving Wellness.

Does DriveWell talk about transportation options? What if my community has no transportation options for older adults other than driving their own cars?

Many communities do not have transportation alternatives for older adults. A DriveWell presentation in those communities can focus on the impact that lack of transportation options has on the health and quality of life of older adults in the community. Presentations could be scheduled not only for older adults and their families but also before community leaders in an effort to stimulate community conversation about the issue.

Will the materials include information on how to handle “problem” drivers? How do we reach out to “problem drivers” who need the information but are in denial?

DriveWell has program materials about conducting family conversations with “problem drivers.” In addition, the Toolkit's references have additional resources available to address the issue. Finally, the DriveWell video that accompanies the Toolkit has a segment and accompanying questions to guide a group discussion about the topic.
