Highlights from Day 3 of Aging in America

The third day of the 2012 Aging in America Conference was packed full of workshops, networking events, poster sessions and two general sessions. Here are some highlights

National Forums

There were two National Forums, one on Building a Workforce to Care for an Aging Society (sponsored by the MetLife Foundation) and another on the Future of Aging (sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care  and MetLife MAture Market Institute). Attendees of these froums were treated to day-long programs featuring preeminent leaders in the field of aging.

ASA Leadership Programs

ASA's New Ventures in Leadership and Leadership Academy participants had the opportunity to meet with Kathy Greenlee, U.S. Assistant Secretary for Aging. She had great advice for both groups on how to be a successful leader. Greenlee told the New Ventures in Leadership partners that their diversity was their strength.

General Sessions

Malnutrition Among Older Adults: Promises and Opportunities

Friday’s first general session, sponsored by Nestle Health Science, addressed the topic of malnutrition among older adults. The moderator, nutrition expert and author  Joy Bauer, welcomed expert researchers Dr. David Thomas and Dr. Marie T. Fanelli Kuczmarski, and Senate Special Committee on Aging Senior Policy Advisor Cara Goldstein. Attendees were given a Self Mini Nutrition Assessment (Self MNA®) for Adults 65 Years of Age and Older from the Nestle Nutrition Institute. Hunger in America

The second general session addressed hunger among older adults. Walmart, in their commitment to fighting hunger, sponsored the session and moderator Joe Quinn, Senior Director, Issue Management and Strategic Outreach at Walmart, convened a panel of experts dedicated to tackling hunger in America: Jo Ann Jenkins, President of the AARP Foundation; Endid Borden, CEO of Meals on Wheels of America; Robert Egger, Founder and President of D.C. Central Kitchen; Mary Pat Raimondi, Vice President of Strategic Policy and Parnerships at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; and Robert Blancato, Executive Director of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services.

Exhibit Hall

In the Exhibit Hall, a series of drawings during the day built excitement; lucky winners received an Apple iPad2, Great Call cellphone, two Southwest Airlines tickets good for any round-trip domestic flight, two $100 Visa gift cards, an Apple iPod touch, two $50 Starbucks gift cards, and a Dell Vostro laptop. In between drawings, attendees had the opportunity to browse and learn from more than 100 top-notch businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations with an outstanding array of products, services, and information for professionals serving older adults.
