November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month

According to the Alzheimer's Association, there are nearly 15 million Alzhiemer's and dementia caregivers. In recognition of National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month, ASA will feature resources and blog posts recognizing caregivers, especially those caring for people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Dementia affects one in eight Americans older than 65. It cannot be prevented, there is no cure, and drug effectiveness is limited. Yet people with dementia can continue to live fulfilling lives despite decreased physical and mental functions. Thanks to a new approach known as person-centered or holistic dementia care, patients and families don’t need to feel helpless when facing the ravages of the condition.

Beyond the Taj Mahal: LEGO Builds International, Intergenerational Bridges

LEGO, the Danish company best known for encouraging children to build 6,000-piece plastic replicas of the Taj Mahal, puts on an annual First LEGO League Challenge for 9- to 16-year-olds. More than 20,000 kids from 61 countries solve a specific problem through engineering and teamwork, with the guidance of an adult mentor. Mentors work with the kids once a week for the approximately eight weeks it takes to complete a project.
