If you have a best-practice program, area of expertise, research or innovation you wish to share with more than 3000 professionals in the field of aging, the Aging in America conference, scheduled for March 28-April 1, 2012 in Washington, DC, is the place to do it. 

Bipartisan Elder Justice Caucus Formed

Rep. Peter King (NY) and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (OR) announced the establishment of a bipartisan Elder Justice Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday, May 25, 2017. ASA Board Chair Bob Blancato, in his role as National Coordinator of the Elder Justice Coalition, applauded this development as well as the introduction by the Caucus co-chairs of H.R. 2639, The Elder Justice Reauthorization Act.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Is June 15

Each year, an estimated 5 million older persons are abused, neglected and exploited. Older adults throughout the United States lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation, funds that they desperately need to pay for basics such as housing, food and medical care. And it is estimated that only about one in five of those crimes are ever reported.

Ethical Caregiving and Protecting Elders

Many elders are too afraid to speak up about the missing medication, or the yelling, or the unexplained bank withdrawals. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that a close relative or loved one is actually a conniving bully instead of a dutiful caregiver.

White House Proclaims May 2017 Older Americans Month

On April 28, 2017, President Trump officially declared May 2017 as Older Americans Month. Celebrating Older Americans Month is one way to remind us to keep up advocacy efforts and honor this cohort’s significant accomplishments and contributions to our society.

The Proclamation states: “As we celebrate Older Americans Month, we take the opportunity to thank our seniors and recognize the enormous contributions they make to the Nation. We are blessed to have their presence, their love, and their unmatched perspective for our families.”
