Mental health practitioners should take note of two realities about elder abuse: a large majority of elder abuse is perpetrated by family members, and the average victim of elder abuse is an older women between 75 and 80 who is living alone, and as a result of isolation and loneliness can entrust the wrong individuals with responsibility for their finances or care. When that trust is violated, elder abuse occurs.

We’ve all heard the statistics. Every 68 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease. With 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, it is currently the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. And now, according to a recent Marist survey[1], it is the nation’s most feared disease ahead of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Shaping the Future for Mental Health and Aging
Tarzana Treatment Center is having their TH Annual Promising Practices: for Mental Health and Aging is a one day conference for case mangers, counselors, social workers, and other health/social services that provides information on how to address mental health issues in older adults. The conference will include keynotes presenters, breakout sessions and discussions on how to develop skills, knowledge and resources to provide quality care that is culturally sensitive.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, there are nearly 15 million Alzhiemer's and dementia caregivers. In recognition of National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month, ASA will feature resources and blog posts recognizing caregivers, especially those caring for people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
