Are you a nurse or health professional working in Parkinson’s?Learn about the latest innovations in PD care through the PDF Nurse Webinar Series, designed for and by Scholars of The Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program at PDF. Scholars of this program represent an innovative network of nurse educators who are working with PDF to advance research, care and nursing education. The series supports their ongoing education and collaboration. Other professionals who share these goals are invited to join the series. Participants may view webinars live or view recordings afterwards. Through PDF’s partnership with the American Society on Aging, continuing education units (CEUs) are available to nurses who participate in the live presentation or access the recorded program within 30 days of each webinar.

Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • Discuss 2 methods of student engagement in learning about Parkinson’s Disease (simulation and reverse case study);
  • Describe how faculty can facilitate learning using best practices and diverse learning styles in education;
  • Discuss the outcomes of an educational research study about PD comparing teaching strategies; and
  • Share successes and challenges in teaching student nurses about Parkinson’s Disease.

Presenters:

Margaret J. McCormickMargaret J. McCormick is a Clinical Associate Professor in Nursing at Towson University, Towson Maryland. Following her training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, she worked for 30 years in many different areas of clinical practice and joined the faculty at Towson University. Both as a clinician and as an educator, Margaret has contributed to many peer reviewed nursing journals and conducted research studies in the area of asthma education, Parkinson’s disease, ethics, simulation, test construction and item writing. She was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Alumni Award of the Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program at the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in 2011, having completed the program at Johns Hopkins University in 2010. Margaret’s project was to develop an unfolding case study on Parkinson’s Disease for simulation. She has successfully been using her model since, has published research on her simulation model, and presented at the AANN National Conference in 2011, the World Parkinson Congress in Scotland in 2010 and will be presenting at the World Parkinson Congress, 2016.

Hannah Murphy BucHannah Murphy Buc is an Assistant Professor at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, Md., where she teaches in the entry-level nursing program. After nursing school, she worked in the ICU setting and completed a graduate degree at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing as a clinical nurse specialist in adult health specializing in palliative and end-of-life care. Hannah’s interest in palliative care is what brought her to the study of Parkinson’s disease, and as an Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Scholar at the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, she has successfully worked to infuse PD content across the curriculum at Notre Dame. For her project for the program, she developed a reverse case study. She is currently completing her doctoral coursework at The Catholic University of America and is designing a qualitative study on the effect of peer-caregiving in the prison hospice environment for her dissertation study.
