The movement to expand the number of Americans who have access to medical aid in dying continues to advance, as demonstrated by recent wins via legislation in 2015 in California, in 2016 in the District of Columbia, and in 2016 in Colorado through a citizen-led referendum to authorize this end-of-life care option. These developments lie in sharp contrast to several years ago when end-of-life care conversations between doctors and their patients were demonized as “death panels.” We do not have to agree on whether medical aid in dying is a good end-of-life care policy. We do need to recognize and understand the groundswell of support for it. This web seminar will discuss: how people equate medical aid in dying with peace of mind and control; the growing consumer movement that is demanding improvements to end-of-life care; how consumer demand for medical aid in dying is changing healthcare delivery in states where the law authorizes this end-of-life care option; and the emerging synergies between hospice and palliative care, with medical aid in dying in states that authorize the latter end-of-life care option.

Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • Understand the recent evolution of perceptions of medical aid in dying, from the debunking of “death panels” to the fact that end-of-life care conversations give patients’ peace of mind and control of their end-of-life care;
  • Describe a growing consumer movement that is demanding important improvements in end-of-life care;
  • Understand how the delivery of end-of-life care is becoming much more patient-centered in states that authorize medical aid in dying; and,
  • Discuss how medical aid in dying is integrated into hospice and palliative care.

Presenter:
