The rising costs of living present challenges for all older adults who depend upon fixed incomes and retirement savings, but it is women who are most likely to struggle financially in their later years. Lower wages, time out of the workforce to care for children (or aging parents) and lack of pensions for part-time jobs, means that women typically retire with less money than men or remain in the workforce longer in order to live comfortably. In this web seminar, speakers will discuss strategies for stabilizing finances during retirement and steps women nearing retirement age can take to prepare for longevity.

Lara Hinz of the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER), will discuss the drivers of women’s retirement insecurity and steps women can take to prepare for unexpected financial events such as health emergencies, divorce and widowhood. Hinz will be joined by Jocelyn Wright, the chair for Women and Financial Services at the American College where she is also an assistant professor of Women’s Studies, who will discuss the importance of building women’s confidence in financial decision-making and times when it makes sense to meet with an advisor, and Lorraine Geraci, an instructor and member of the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association’s Education Committee. Geraci will explain strategies and tools, including reverse mortgages, available to older homeowners seeking to convert a portion of their housing wealth into a liquid asset that can supplement savings.

Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • Identify the leading drivers of retirement insecurity among women;
  • Help women prepare for financial events such as divorce and widowhood;
  • Help women choose the right financial advisor;
  • Identify ways to supplement retirement funds with home equity; and,
  • Describe consumer protections for reverse mortgage borrowers and their spouses
