Barriers to completion are vast\, but many struggle to begin because of uncertainty around several factors\, including including family history\, identity\, bias\, and faith. Aging services professionals\, healthcare professionals\, death doulas\, and others in someone’s circle of care have a unique opportunity to open the door for these discussions. \nWe will highlight barriers to advance care planning and three of the critical “Fwords” that may arise; faith\, family\, and fatphobia. Sharing frameworks and insights from research and bedside experience\, we will highlight some of the ways these themes can be incorporated into the discussion safely and with care. \n  \nParticipants in this webinar will be able to:\n\nShare two barriers to advance care planning in America.\nDescribe how a professional’s bias can impact a human’s end-of-life experience.\nAccess at least one resource that can be downloaded and used to support these discussions within their workplace.\n\n  \nPresenters:\nIsabella Carr (she/her) is an incoming Ph.D. student in History of Consciousness at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. She holds a B.A. in Religion from the University of Southern California and an MDiv from Harvard Divinity School. Carr is the founder of Deathfat Doula\, which provides end-of-life care\, advance planning support\, and community education with particular attention to the experiences and needs of fat people and those in larger bodies. She also works with Compassion & Choices as an end-of-life consultant supporting individuals and families in navigating end-of-life options. She has presented on deathfat as a model of care at the American Academy of Religion Annual Conference\, ASA On Aging\, NEDA’s Doulapalooza\, and several other venues.\n \n \n \n \n \n \nZeena Regis\, MDiv\, serves as the Director of Faith Engagement and Priority Populations at Compassion & Choices. Prior to that role\, Regis served as a hospice chaplain and grief care coordinator for almost a decade. She also serves on the faculty of Columbia Theological Seminary’s Older Adult Ministry Certification program. Her training includes a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Agnes Scott College and a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. Regis is also a playwright\, and her latest work\, A Free Black Woman’s Guide to Death & Dying\, was selected for the Synchronicity Theatre’s arts incubator project and premiered in 2022.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nOsha Towers (they/them) is a passionate Black\, queer\, and nonbinary person who aims to uplift community-led programming. Their career has been dedicated to advocating for survivors of sexual violence\, expanding youth leadership\, reallocating funds\, and improving LGBTQ+ care. They are currently working nationally as the LGBTQ+ Engagement Director for Compassion and Choices. They envision a future that is built by and for Black and brown\, queer and trans people.
