HIV Prevention After 50: Expanding Awareness, Access, and Conversations

Adults over 50 are an increasingly important part of the HIV prevention and care landscape, yet they are often overlooked in conversations about sexual health, HIV risk, and prevention. This webinar will examine HIV prevention in older adulthood, including sexual health, PrEP awareness and access, prevention stigma, and the role of healthcare and aging-service providers in initiating inclusive prevention conversations. An intersectional lens will be used to explore how age, ethnicity, HIV status, sexual orientation, immigration experience, language, and socioeconomic circumstances can shape access to prevention and care, with particular attention to the experiences of Latino older adults. Participants will learn practical, culturally responsive strategies that can be applied in healthcare, aging services, and community settings to improve communication, engagement, prevention access, and whole-person care.
Participants in this webinar will be able to:

- Engaging key stakeholders in collaborative dialogue centered on patient needs and outcomes.
- Elevating clinical discourse by grounding therapeutic decisions in patient-first evidence.

Presenters:
Luis Nava Molero is the Director of Aging Initiatives at the Latino Commission on AIDS, where he served as well at The Positive Life Workshop, and at The Latino Religious Leadership Program. Recently, he served as the Chair of the Policy and External Relations Work Group at The DOH NYC HIV Planning Group, and co-chair at the NYC Joint Policy Committee at the NYC HIV Planning Council. Prior to his work with the Latino Commission on AIDS he served at the New York LGBT Center focusing on Immigration Support and Immigration Social Action activities. His work helped connect new immigrants with services and programs to help them establish successful lives. Luis has extensive meaningful experience working with Spanish-speaking people living with HIV.
Kwame Thompson began his work with COPE in 2016 as a part-time data analyst. After contributing to the development of several key policies and procedures, he gradually took on a more prominent role in COPE’s testing and outreach initiatives. Driven by a desire to connect the numbers with real people, he moved beyond data alone and began engaging directly with communities across New York City. Through this hands-on work, Kwame identified critical opportunities to strengthen community health systems and make care more patient-centered. He works actively to decrease stigma around HIV testing and to build stronger community support for all people affected by chronic diseases. He has supported major projects in HIV prevention within faith-based communities citywide, and he led a successful initiative to identify and treat hepatitis C (HCV) in the community. Under his leadership, COPE located 100 individuals living with HCV, ensured they were tested, linked to care, and ultimately cured within a single year.

Participants who attend the live webinar will receive a Certificate of Attendance from the American Society on Aging documenting their participation. Certificates of Attendance are issued only for participation in the live webinar. Participants who watch the on-demand recording are not eligible to receive a Certificate of Attendance.
The certificate may be submitted to a participant’s professional accreditation organization, state licensing board, employer, or other credentialing body for consideration toward continuing education or professional development requirements.
