This web seminar will provide three unique models from universities that have successfully incorporated evidence-based health and wellness workshops as a part of the curriculum for students from diverse disciplines. These models can expand and enrich students’ education, while addressing workforce challenges around evidence-based program delivery. A Matter of Balance is one program that connects older adults with students to enhance the learning experience.

<Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • Identify the three components of an evidence-based program;
  • Describe three different approaches to using students to deliver evidence-based programs, including A Matter of Balance;
  • Identify the potential benefits and challenges associated with student delivery of evidence-based programs, including evaluating program viability, scheduling trainings, reviewing issues related to fidelity and quality assurance, marketing and recruiting participants, data collection and sustainability; and,
  • Describe the steps for community-based organizations, such as local Area Agencies on Aging and healthcare entities, to collaborate and partner with an institute of higher education to use students for evidence-based program delivery.

Presenters:

 

Dr. Jennifer Tripken is an associate professor and department chair of Health Education and Promotion at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. She is the principal investigator on a 2018 Administration for Community Living grant to disseminate and sustain evidence-based falls prevention programs in Northern Virginia.

 

 

Patti League, RN, is the national program manager of A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls, overseeing the training of Master Trainers, support and technical assistance for the program.

 

 

Cindy Quinn is the Active for Life program manager for the Texas A&M Center for Population Health and Aging, focusing on clinical to community collaboration for sustainability of evidence-based programs.

 

 

 

Elton Bordenave is an associate professor in the department of Audiology and the director for the Center for Resilience in Aging at A.T. Still University in Mesa, Ariz.
