June 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Medicare. Since President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Medicare bill into law in 1965, Medicare has opened doors to healthcare and increased economic security for hundreds of millions of older adults, people with disabilities, and their families. In celebration of this milestone, the American Society on Aging (ASA) is devoting the Summer 2015 issue of its quarterly journal, Generations, to “Medicare at 50 Years.”
The issue, guest edited by John Rother, president/CEO, National Coalition on Health Care and Tricia Neuman, a senior vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation and director of the Foundation’s Program on Medicare Policy and its Project on Medicare’s Future, delivers a timely and insightful exploration of Medicare—past, present and future. More than two dozen articles from expert contributors address a broad range of topics, including personal reflections on the launch of Medicare, a focus on how well the program serves an aging population (and people with disabilities), the politics of Medicare, and, and most importantly, key opportunities and challenges facing Medicare’s future.
To kick off this issue’s release, ASA is hosting a free-of-charge special event on Monday, June 15, in Washington, D.C. (see details and agenda below). The late afternoon event will include a panel briefing and audience engagement session, with an early evening reception to follow.
Sponsored in part by the Robert Wood Foundation President’s Grant Fund of the Princeton Area Community Foundation, the Benjamin Rose Institute, and Compassion & Choices, we are confident this special issue of Generations will be a useful, insightful resource for professionals and advocates in aging, as well as all groups, organizations and stakeholders interested in health policy issues and the challenges affecting older adults.
We hope you will join us for what promises to be a stimulating discussion about Medicare with thought leaders and experts.
